Trash - Beauty
Sustainability holds great importance within this collection, inspired by the recognition of the natural beauty of oceans and the impact that plastic pollution is having on ocean life. Brightly coloured hand-embroidery portraying the texture of coral brings re-purposed denim back to life. A carefully considered structure, inspired by ivy-covered buildings, depicts natural complex formations within nature. Translucent plastics covered with nets and threads form a second layer, swamping the natural beauty underneath. Oversized plastic silhouettes were inspired by fishermen, and represent the swamping of sea life, restricting it from view and movement. The heavy use of layering is key in communicating the message behind this collection. Unconventional materials such as food wrappers and bubble wraps have been carefully chosen and constructed to form both shape and surface design. The textiles applied to this collection have been produced to ensure a minimal impact on the environment. Methods such as printing have been deliberately avoided and replaced with textural handmade textiles, eliminating both chemical and water pollution. Each component used, from the materials to the zips and threads, has been consciously sourced from second hand. This collection takes pre-existing, unwanted materials and gives them
a new, desirable life, preventing them from entering the ocean and inevitably becoming a pollutant.
